Things To Know About PDF Files and
How To Get the Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader

All the readings for the first half of the course are in pdf format. This means they have a filename which ends with pdf.

For example, the article about baseball is titled: Baseball-Magic.pdf.  The easiest way to tell if you can read pdf files on your computer is to click the link below.

Click Here to see if you can read pdf files

If a file opens and you can read what it says, then you can read all the pdf files in the class. If not, you need to download and install a pdf reader on any computer you want to use to read and print the material from this class.

If you have Windows XP you can download Adobe Acrobat 8.0 (the pdf reader to use) by clicking this next link:
(tip: unclick the check in the box that says: "Also download Adobe Photoshop Starter Kit." You do not need to litter your computer with unnecessary stuff). Click here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

If you are totally unfamiliar with computers and with installing software, and don't know if you have Windows XP,  get somebody to help you -- a friend, relative, neighborhood, friend of a friend. There are lots of people around who can help you do this.

If you have an old computer and are using Windows 98 you may have a hard time. You may need to find another computer to use to read and print out the articles. But you can try to make it work. For an earlier version of Adobe Acrobat (5) Click here: http://www.savewealth.com/support/acrobat/win98/

A PDF file, including all the readings in this course, can take quite a while to open up if you are using a dial-up modem and an old computer. The connection speed will be slow and the computer will be underpowered with not much memory.

However, once you get the file to open you can save it to your own computer. That can be much faster in opening than going on the internet through a dial up.

We can talk about all this in class. Depending on where you live, there may be people in class who can help you configure Adobe Acrobat on your computer.

Hopefully most people will already have Adobe Acrobat on their computers and this will not be a problem.
